BURNING ISSUES ON EAST-WEST AGENDA

14.02.2007

Almaty, Kazakhstan, February – The most divisive issues in global politics are on the agenda of a unique East-West conference, the Eurasian Media Forum, to be hosted by Kazakhstan in Almaty on April 19-21.
The organisers of the annual Forum have invited an influential list of several hundred politicians, business leaders, academics and journalists from all over the world, with strong representation from Central Asia, Russia and the CIS countries.
“Our aim is to make a unique contribution to international understanding by bringing together the newsmakers and the news reporters to discuss the burning issues of the moment,” said Dariga Nazarbayeva, founder and chair of the of the Eurasian Media Forum (EAMF) Organizing Committee.
Sensitive issues on the table for the 6th Forum this year include:
·          US foreign policy and the war in Iraq
·          Security and regional conflicts in the post-Soviet world
·          The national nuclear ambitions – Iran to North Korea
·          Oil and gas – pipeline politics
In sessions on professional media concerns, delegates will also review press freedom questions in the CIS, changes in media law, the influence of financial journalism and the international trend towards the ‘glamorisation’ – or dumbing down – of television ‘reality’ entertainment.
