The second briefing of the 6th Eurasian Media Forum was held for the journalists

1.02.2007

On the 30th January 2007, there was held at Almaty City National Press Club the second news conference on the 6th Eurasian Media Forum (the “EAMF”) scheduled for 19th-21st April 2007 in Almaty. A statement, made by the participants of the news conference, was in the spotlight. They said that there had been certain ideological discrepancies among the organisers over the agenda of the 6th Forum.

The organising committee of the EAMF comprises four groups, based in London, Moscow, Almaty and Hong Kong. Efforts being made to make an ideological “menu” of the EAMF are intensifying. The groups are exchanging draft agendas. Bearing in mind quite alarming political events and phenomena that occurred recently in the world the group, based in Almaty, insists on a tougher wording. People from the headquarters, based in London, are resolutely advocating for more “politically correct” draft. However, the 6th EAMF will still open by discussing the topic of dehumanisation of political means and methods of today that is the outcome of the difficult compromise, as the speakers of the news conference believe.

The organisers said that the main items on the agenda had been generally identified. They announced the topics of the new sessions namely “Kazakhstan’s Chairmanship of the OSCE: pros and cons”. A well-known Russian presenter Vladimir Solovyev was invited to produce and moderate it. Savik Shuster will be moderating a session titled Regulating the Media Market, and Freedom of Press in the FSU. An intense political conflict, provoked by a series of incidents between Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and the European Union, will be analysed during the course of the session titled Peculiarities of the Pipeline Policy.

The organisers expect that a lot of attention will be brought to a topic to be discussed on the second day titled Nuclear Programme: Sovereign Right or Dangerous Ambitions. Efforts are being made to arrange for the participation of Mr. Mohammad Hatami, former president of Iran, in the session.

CNN International is acting as a general international news partner of the EAMF. RIA-Novosti, ITAR-TASS, International Herald Tribune, the Asian Pacific Union of TV and Radio Broadcasters became news partners of the EAMF, too.

The next news conference on the Eurasian Media Forum is scheduled for the second half of March.
