The 7th annual Eurasian Media Forum took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan on April 24-25, 2008

8.05.2008

The conference was the biggest in its history, with over 500 delegates from East and West: political leaders, academics and journalists from the regional and international media.  President Nursultan Nazarbayev opened the Forum with a call for international cooperation to cope with coming food and energy shortages (see NEWS on this page).  Dr Dariga Nazarbayeva, founder of the Forum, welcomed the delegates.  Other key speakers were Srgjan Kerim, President of the 62nd Session of the United Nations General assembly, Marc Perrin de Brichambaut, Secretary General of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and Zbigniew Brzezinski, US National Security Advisor to President Carter.  An Executive Report on the conference debates will be published shortly on this website.
The location of the conference is in itself symbolic.  Kazakhstan is the very heart of Eurasia, a country where the values of ancient civilizations, cultural, economic, social and ideological ties connect the East and the West, bringing together Europe and Asia. Almaty, the former capital of the Republic, is now a major business and cultural centre.  A green city full of flowers and trees in blossom, it unfolds at the foothills of the Zaili Alatau Mountains, still snow capped at this time of year.
