EAST-WEST LEADERS AND MEDIA GATHER IN KAZAKHSTAN
1.04.2007Almaty, Kazakhstan, March 2007 - Political leaders and journalists from East and West will be gathering in Kazakhstan shortly to dissect the latest news issues affecting regional peace and prosperity in Central Asia and beyond.
Among the key speakers scheduled to address the annual Eurasian Media Forum (EAMF) to be held in Almaty on April 19—21 are:
- Mohammad Khatami, former President of Iran
- Eugenie Primakov, former Prime Minister of Russia
- OSCE Secretary General, Ambassador Marc Perrin de Brichambaut
The United States will be represented by two leading strategists from both sides of the Washington spectrum: Richard Holbrooke (Democrat) and Richard Perle (Republican).
The United Kingdom will be represented by, among other speakers, by the controversial Member of Parliament, George Galloway.
The European Union, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and NATO will all figure prominently in discussions about how these long established institutions are coping with the challenges thrown up by changing international relationships.
On the journalistic side, the conference will also debate a number of media themes, including aspects of freedom of the press, the handling of financial news and the ‘glamorisation' of television through the cult of celebrity and ‘reality' shows.
The Eurasian Media Forum is a non-political body founded to promote East-West understanding through involvement of the media as well as political and business leaders. This will be its 6th annual conference.
