Kazakhstan ready to help solve global economic crisis – President Nazarbayev

27.04.2009

Kazakhstan calls on all countries to develop new forms of international cooperation to resolve the worst financial and economic crisis in history, President Nursultan Nazarbayev told delegates to the 8th annual Eurasian Media Forum.

In an opening message to the two-day conference held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on April 23-24, the Kazakh leader said the crisis had broken out against the backdrop of an unstable international political situation.
“Today, resolute steps by all countries are needed to develop new forms of international cooperation and interaction, which can stabilize the development of the world’s economy and overcome global imbalances,” he said.

“Kazakhstan has been and remains a venue for dialogue about the most pressing problems of modern life. We are ready to participate actively in the search for solutions to the global economic crisis and in creating a new global architecture.”

President Nazarbayev praised the Forum, a non-political platform for East-West communication, as reflecting his country’s conviction that further development of the modern world was only possible through dialogue and partnership, mutual understanding and respect.

This is the Eighth Eurasian Media Forum in Almaty, bringing together respected experts, famous politicians and journalists to discuss the most relevant international problems as well as new approaches to solving those problems, he said.

Secretary of State Kanat Saudabayev, who read the President’s message at the opening session, said the Forum had won wide international acclaim in the past eight years.

“We believe your work will help find solutions to the financial and economic crisis and achieve progress in the complex process of establishing a fair balance of interests among all countries,” he said.

“This crisis has yet again demonstrated the special role played by the mass media, the exceptional importance of their objectivity and their constructive analysis in reporting the facts.

“The media today, in a sense, comes across as one of the most important anti-crisis resources. International experts note that the main reason for the deepening of the global crisis is lack of confidence. The restoration of trust among people and states, the restoration of citizens’ confidence in tomorrow is one of the highest and noblest tasks for the journalistic community and the mass media,” Mr Saudabayev said.

Dariga Nazarbayeva, Chair of the Organising Committee, welcoming delegates in her opening address, stressed that only a continuous multi-channel global dialogue would facilitate the restoration of the balance of trust in global politics and the economy.

“Only this dialogue will prevent the world from getting into more and more conflicts,” she declared.
Dr Nazarbayeva said the crisis represented an ideological and intellectual challenge, which required constructive engagement by the media.

“What is peculiar about this crisis is that for the first time it is happening in the era of global communications,” she said, adding that this could increase public tension and anxiety, even if not justified by actual events.  “The worst thing in a crisis is to panic and start thinking negatively.”

Dr Nazarbayeva said she was convinced that the Forum was one of the most important centres for holding an East-West dialogue to keep the public informed, forming a kind of common information community in Eurasia.

“I would even call it the community of understanding of civilisations,” she declared.
