THE REPORTING OF EXTREME TERRORIST INCIDENTS

Since the September 11th attack in New York there has been an increase in the number of extreme terrorist incidents including the co-ordinated Madrid bombing and the massacre of hundreds of schoolchildren in Beslan. In the age of 24-hour news coverage such events pose new problems for journalists. What are the dangers of too much live reporting of such dramatic incidents? Do the media, especially television, focus on the immediate and the sensational at the expense of a sober responsible analysis of the causes and consequences of such acts of violence? How critical should journalists be of government actions to try to solve such enormous crises? Is the media part of the problem or the solution?
How ethical is it to show video footage of hostages provided by their captors? Is this kind of political blackmailing becoming a means of propaganda of power and terrorism with the help of media?

TAMING THE INTERNET

The influence of the Internet continues to grow rapidly as connection speeds become faster and more people in less developed parts of the world begin to gain more access to cyberspace. The multiple sources of information and news on the Internet can be baffling both for consumers and journalists alike. The web is viewed as an effective tool for investigative journalism: the best news sources and the best way to find experts. What are the dangers and opportunities for the established media in this fast-changing world? One of the world’s leading experts in internet journalism, Julian Sher from Canada, guides us through the complexities of the web. He gives a unique insight into harnessing the investigative power of the Internet and spotting the problems caused by unreliable sources on the web. He also looks at the web as a tool for democracy - how the web can give journalists a weapon to fight against corruption and for freedom of expression?

Producer & Speaker: Julian Sher, Founder of journalism.net, expert on Internet journalism, Canada
