Kazak Media Forum

1.05.2003

The expansive, tree-lined avenues of this Central Asian city made a grand and exotic locale for the 2nd EurAsian Media Forum (www.eamedia.org) co-sponsored by CNN in Almaty, Kazakhstan and chaired by Dr. Dariga Nazarbayava (April 24-26). With topics ranging from Caspian hydro-carbon reserves to pluralism, the annual EurAsian Media Forum brought together journalists, news executives and academics from East and West for discussions and presentations in the regional context of Central Asia.

The conference opened with an address by Kazakhstan's President, Nursultan Nazarbayev. CNN Business Anchor Richard Quest chaired a panel examining media coverage of the Caspian Sea region. This and other panels included journalists and government representatives from surrounding states - Uzbekistan, Kygyrzstan, Tajikistan and Azerbaijan, as well as from Russia and Europe. UNESCO, the EU, NATO and other international organisations were also present.

Closing the conference on April 26th, CNN partnered with Kazakhstan's leading media group, Khabar (www.khabar.kz), and regional satellite broadcaster, Caspionet in hosting a spectacular gala event.
