President Mohammad Khatami called for dialogue between civilizations

25.04.2002

ALMATY, April 25 (AFP) - President Mohammad Khatami called for dialogue between civilizations. Thursday while warning against use of "the language of evil" on the second leg of a Central Asian tour.
"The world fears that the language of violence and evil will reign and that the Cold War-era will return," Khatami told delegates to a 63-nation Eurasian media forum in Almaty, southern Kazakhstan.
"The enemies of dialogue think they are the symbols of truth but they only see themselves and don't notice others. They create enemies, they see enemies everywhere and they use their language for confrontation," he added.
Khatami's comments were a direct reference to US President George W. Bush's accusation in his state of the nation address in January that Iran, along with Iraq and North Korea, formed an "axis of evil."
